Kenya
If you have been watching or reading the news lately then you might have heard that Kenya is in a food crisis.
Kenya is to declare a national emergency because of a drought affecting the East African country.
President Mwai Kibaki's government warned that nearly 10 million people - more than a quarter of the population - were at risk from food shortages. The government intends to import five million bags of maize, reduce the price of seeds and buy up livestock in drought-hit areas to ease the crisis. Famine relief packages including maize and beans are also to be distributed.
A drought in 2006 killed dozens of people and thousands of livestock - the main source of livelihood for nomads in the arid north-east of the country.
The decision to declare a national emergency was taken at a food security meeting chaired by President Mwai Kibaki and attended by ministers of his coalition government.
"President Kibaki told the food security committee that the entire government must focus on the urgency of providing food to all Kenyans after the failed rains in the last two seasons and reduced production due to last year's post-election challenges," a government statement said.
Correspondents say Kenya's finances are already under strain because of last year's post-election violence, which badly affected the economy.
At least 300,000 people were displaced in the unrest, many of them farmers who have been too frightened to return home and plant crops.
Let us introduce you to a good friend of ours, his name is Jamleck and he lives in Kenya.
We asked him to send a few words to put on this website. This is what he emailed us
The name of the church is, KEYWAY PENTECOSTAL CHURCH KENYA MISSION. We are Pentecostal by faith. We are located in Kenya, we come from the Kisii Highlands and our goal is to fullfil the great commission of our Lord Christ Jesus of making disciples of all nations. We come from a very poor background but we have always found comfort, strength and grace in the Lord.. We have seen the Lord bless this ministry spiritually because He is always adding unto the flock. We are soon planting another congregation and we need prayers from the brethren. We are runing a christian academy but in very poor condition because of lack of resources and we are praying that the Lord may raise faithful men and women to come to aid of the school and help with education materials, most children who study here are orphans. We are praying for an orphanage, a health centre to help our poor people afford medication which is very expensive in Kenya, we are praying for church project which will help raise the standardof living of our people, praying for supporters of this ministry to achieve its goal of evangelising the whole of Africa and the world. We need church sound equipments, plots where we can build our own buildings because we have rented where we gather and we struggle with rent due to poverty.
The physical situation with us is very bad because we are facing many challenges the current and worse one now being hunger and diseases, hunger has killed many people in kenya and scores are threatend unless a miracle happens, people in Kenya are eating leaves and others have died from eating poisonous wild fruits, many children from poor families have left school because their parents cannot educate them beyond primary 8. We also need Bibles in our own mother tongue because a great number of our people do not understand English, we need cows for milk and chicken for eggs to help our people with nutrients and balanced diet.
We need more and more prayers because the needs are great both spiritually and physically, when we raise up our eyes we see the fileds white with the harvest and more labourers are needed please pray with us to the Lord of the harvest to provide more workers. Pray for our families which are hard hit by hunger, pray for Kenya.
Please pray continually for Jamleck and his church that God will prosper them and help them in this time of need.
If you feel you could help by making a donation please contact the church as we have a mission fund which we hope to send to people in need.
